Frequently Asked Questions

Woman | Dentures in Akron OHMissing a tooth not only completely affects your appearance, but it can alter the shape and contours of your jawline. A space between your teeth can cause neighboring teeth to shift towards the gap, which can lead to jaw bone recession and facial sagging.

Filling in the gap not only prevents oral health issues and restores your bite function—allowing you to enjoy your favorite foods again and speak with clarity. Don’t hide your happy smile because you are self-conscious about your missing tooth. Our dental procedures can restore your joy and quality of life.

We Restore Missing Teeth

At Frontier Dental, our tooth restoration dental procedures include complete and partial dentures. They are considered a standard in tooth restoration options for many of our patients in Medina, OH. Modern dentures utilize specialized materials that allow your dentures to look completely natural and feel more comfortable than traditional dentures.

How to Take Care of Your Dentures

The main thing to avoid is letting your dentures dry or using heat to clean them. Hot water or leaving them in a hot car can end up warping them, so they do not fit comfortably anymore. Your prosthodontist, Dr. Sanjay Karunagaran, will be able to provide aftercare tips and guidelines to help you care for your new dentures and increase their longevity.

You might think your days of enjoying a nice steak are over, but you would be wrong.

With practice, patients can easily eat their most enjoyable food with full or partial dentures.

We recommend starting with soft and smooth food. Some examples include fish, steamed vegetables, puddings, eggs, and chopped food. Once you feel confident, we encourage you to enjoy chewy foods like steak or apples cut into pieces.

It might take a little adjustment to get used to hot and cold foods, but this is very common. With practice, you can eat with ease without worrying about burning your mouth.

At Frontier Dental, we always recommend taking your time when it comes to getting used to a dental prosthetic. By starting slow with small cuts of food, you can gradually work your way to larger quantities.

Our Medina Patients Can Eat Whatever They Love

Once patients are entirely comfortable and adjusted to wearing dentures, the world is their oyster.

However, some foods will always be a little tricky, especially sticky and hard foods. It's best to avoid anything that could damage your denture.

At Frontier Dental, Dr. Sanjay Karunagaran and Dr. Michael Horan are always available to go over any questions and concerns you may have about your tooth replacement restorations.

In the meantime, take things slow, chew gently, and use both sides of your mouth.

Our team at Frontier Dental is highly skilled in helping patients take the step in restoring missing teeth.

Dentures have many advantages that make them easy to enjoy, including:

Benefits of Dentures

Not all tooth replacement options are as varied and adaptive as dentures are, they can restore missing teeth regardless of the reason they were lost (injury, infection, gum disease, tooth decay, etc.)

Restoring missing teeth can make your smile beautiful again, and this can give your self-esteem and self-confidence a boost that might have disappeared.

Restoring missing teeth means more to your oral health than just a beautiful appearance. Your mouth relies on each of your teeth to help with biting, chewing, and even keeping your facial features full in appearance.

When a tooth goes missing, patients might start experiencing facial sagging, which makes them look older.

Since dentures rest along the gum line, they are considered more conservative and less invasive than dental implants.

Cleaning dentures is as easy as removing them and brushing them!

Best of all, dentures can restore all your teeth on the upper or lower arch, or both.

Complete dentures involve multiple missing teeth on the upper, lower or both arches of your mouth. Sometimes the dentist will need to extract teeth to fit the denture completely. With complete dentures, your Medina, OH dentist will provide you with immediate dentures, which are temporary and allow the patient to eat, smile and speak comfortably while they heal.

Partial dentures are a removable dental prosthetic that restores the appearance and function of your mouth by replacing one or more teeth. They fit around your existing teeth and do not require any tooth extractions, and they utilize your surrounding teeth as anchors to support the denture. Partial dentures strengthen the underlying structures of your mouth including your gums, bone, and facial muscles. They also prevent teeth from shifting out of place while giving you a beautiful smile.

Snap-on dentures are a removable, palateless denture that can be snapped on or off as often as needed. The denture is placed gently onto mini implants and snapped in for a stronger bite and beautiful smile.older couple laughing outside | snap on dentures near me

The Implant Process Explained

Through a minimally invasive surgical process, our oral maxillofacial surgeon, Dr. Michael Horan, places mini implants into your jawbone. These tiny implants are the anchors that strengthen the jawbone and support the dentures.

The implants are tiny titanium alloy posts that function as a new root and are the fixture that your denture snaps into place. Snap-on dentures provide stability and strength and allow you to eat all the hard foods that missing teeth do not facilitate, like carrots, apples, and even steak!

Long-Lasting Health Benefits of Dentures

There are many benefits of having dentures, both physically and mentally. Today’s custom-made dentures are more comfortable and durable than in years past, and they can transform your health. Dentures can:

Enhance Your Appearance

Nothing adds to your appearance like a beautiful, healthy smile, thanks to dentures.

Boost Your Self-Esteem

close up of denture partials | dentures medina ohNo more hiding your smile! Dentures can give you a natural-looking and functional smile you’re proud of.

Help You Bite and Chew Easily Again

It can be difficult or painful to eat certain foods with missing teeth, and dentures restore comfort and chewing function.

Provide Support for Facial Features

Tooth loss results in a lack of support for facial features like lips and cheeks and contributes to a saggy, sunken appearance. Dentures fill out the face and restore a fuller, more youthful appearance.

Improve Your Speech

Tooth loss makes it difficult to form certain words, but replacing missing teeth with dentures helps you speak clearly again.

Easy to Remove

You can remove your dentures easily for quick and thorough cleaning. The better you take care of your dentures, the longer they will last without discoloration or wear.

Improve Your Oral Health

Missing teeth can force existing teeth to shift in the mouth, cause misalignment, and put additional stress on the remaining teeth. This, in turn, can wreak havoc on your oral health; however, dentures can correct this problem substantially.

Our team at Frontier Dental Ohio offers comprehensive restorations for patients who have decayed, missing, or broken teeth. Whether you are missing only a few teeth or a whole set, we can help you determine the best dentures for your smile

Complete Dentures Replace All Your Missing Teeth

Everyone wants a confident smile, regardless of age. A complete removable denture consists of carefully crafted artificial teeth set in a gum-colored base. Dentures are appropriate if you are missing all teeth in your lower arch, upper arch, or both, depending on the number of teeth remaining. The best results are obtained when you have a matching set of upper and lower dentures. This way, we can control where you put the teeth and how they bite down.

Categories of Complete Dentures

Conventional Dentures

The first step for conventional dentures is the removal of remaining teeth at least two months before your new denture is crafted. In some cases, patients come to us with teeth that they have lost for several years. When dentures are made several weeks after teeth are extracted or if the teeth are not there, a better result can be obtained. This timing allows for the healing of the extraction site so we can fix the denture accurately on stable tissue and ensure a precise fit.

Some patients prefer this route because it gives them a more stable denture. Some patients do not like this option and request that they have dentures made on the day their teeth are extracted. These are called immediate dentures.

Immediate Dentures

These dentures are inserted the day all the teeth are extracted from your mouth. The dentures are made before your day of surgery, where you have several appointments to determine where to put the teeth. Immediate dentures are ideal for patients who do not want to go without their teeth during healing.

The drawback of this procedure is that the denture will not fit optimally after the surgery as the gums are bleeding and swollen. These dentures, therefore, need several relines until your gums are fully healed. We ask all our patients to use these dentures until their gums are completely healed up, at which point a new complete denture should be made. Many of our patients opt for this

Partial Dentures Replace Some Missing Teeth Partial Dentures

We custom-design partial dentures for patients who do not need to replace all upper or lower teeth as a complete denture does. Partials are made out of acrylic, metal, or flexible resin, which has become more popular.

These are great options to replace several of your missing teeth if you cannot afford implants to replace the multiple. However, all remaining teeth must be in good condition and strong enough to hook clips and components in place and share the load of dentures with the gums.

Immediate Dentures Placed after Extraction

Immediate dentures can be either complete or partial dentures. If we extract a single tooth and need to wait while you save up for a dental implant, an immediate denture is a very efficient and affordable option.

Due to changes in the mouth and jaws after tooth extraction, we will need to reline Immediate dentures several times to ensure a perfect fit and comfortable function. The more teeth we remove, the more relines we will need to perform.

Also, the condition of your teeth before extraction is critical. If your teeth are in bad shape, you will need another set of dentures when your gums are all healed up. This is our recommendation.

Fixed Hybrid Dentures Use Implants for Stability

3D rendering on dental implant bridge | dental implants medina ohFixed hybrid dentures are a modern, state-of-the-art solution that has completely changed how prosthodontists approach replacing a full set of missing teeth.

These dentures, sometimes referred to as All-on-4® dentures are “fixed” because they are attached to dental implants anchored in the jawbone. Fixed hybrid dentures are acrylic with a metal core or framework for strength and rigidity, and you do not need to remove them at night.

To place a hybrid denture, we first need to place the implant and allow about four months for it to heal and integrate with the jawbone. The final fixed dentures are made after healing is complete.

Our flat-rate fee for hybrid dentures includes:

  • Removing existing teeth and placing all implants, components, and parts
  • Providing a set of temporary dentures on the day of surgery
  • Placing the final restoration—typically a denture—three to four months after implant placement

Over the past decade, the success of fixed hybrid dentures has been scientifically proven and documented with favorable clinical outcomes and results.

Cosmetic Dentures Improve Facial Appearance Cosmetic Dentures

The aging process and loss of teeth can lead to a shortened face, which causes wrinkles because of a natural compression of facial features. With cosmetic dentures done by Dr. Karunagaran, we can help you resolve aesthetic concerns and avoid the common risks associated with more invasive procedures.

Cosmetic dentures can reduce some of the effects of aging, but they are often used in combination with cosmetic surgery. These dentures increase facial height and support and fill out the face to prevent a shrunken facial appearance.
